Anyone I edit for will have heard me wittering on about a book called the [amazon_textlink asin=’0999296310′ text=’Emotion Thesaurus’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’michelledunba-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’0762dbfb-f5e8-42ac-bbe1-98c4975671fa’] (and if you haven’t you will – trust me on that). In my opinion this book is a must have for any writer of fiction. Once upon a time my characters went a little overboard with all their nodding, smirking, shrugging and whispering (like every few pages overboard, sometimes more).
The Emotion Thesaurus cured me of this, allowing me to use other mannerisms to show the same emotion without having the poor reader roll their eyes in the frustration of ‘seeing’ another nod, smirk etc…
There is another book out – Emotion Amplifiers – a companion to the Emotion Thesaurus, and best of all, it is free (at the time of writing).
